Octavian was the great-nephew of Julius Caesar and became his heir. After Caesar's death in 44 BC, he joined forces with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus in the Second Triumvirate. They defeated Caesar's assassins at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC and then began a struggle for power among themselves. Antony and Augustus soon forced Lepidus to retire, and in 31 BC Octavius defeated Antony at the Battle of Actium. In 27 BC, the Senate gave him the name Augustus, which meant great or majestic, and in 23 BC he became Rome's first emperor. Augustus's reign (known as the Pax Romana) saw the birth of Jesus, as well as the expansion of the Roman Empire, the construction of numerous public buildings, and a flourishing in the arts and literature.
