James Buchanan was the president of the United States in the years leading up to the Civil War. He is widely considered to be a mediocre president because of his failure to stop the growing conflict between the North and South. Prior to serving as president, he was a successful and popular politician, and he was nominated by the Democratic Party as a compromise between supporters and opponents of slavery. As president, he unsuccessfully tried to keep peace between the North and South, believing that secession was illegal but that taking military action to stop it was also illegal. His popularity declined as southern states began to secede near the end of his term, and the Democratic Party split in two.
