Short biography:
Cleopatra was the last ruler of Egypt before it was conquered by Rome. She was descended from the Greek Ptolemy family, who were put in charge of Egypt when Alexander the Great conquered it. At the age of seventeen, she met and fell in love with Julius Caesar, who had come to Egypt in search of his rival, Pompey. Caesar helped her beat out her siblings for control of Egypt. After Caesar was assassinated, Cleopatra fell in love with Mark Antony, one of Caesar's successors, and became his ally. Antony and Cleopatra fought against Octavian, Caesar's adopted heir, who wanted to take over Rome. In 31 BC, Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium, and they committed suicide the next year. With their deaths, Octavian became the ruler of Rome, and Egypt became part of the Roman Empire.
