Short biography:
Edward was the eldest son of King Henry III. He was a skilled military leader, and as a young man he defeated rebellious English barons in the Battle of Evesham and took part in the Ninth Crusade. His father died in 1272 while Edward was away on the crusade, and he was crowned king when he returned to England in 1274. From 1274 to 1276, Llywelyn II, the prince of Wales, refused to pay homage to Edward, and Edward began a series of military campaigns against Wales, which eventually resulted in Wales becoming part of England in 1284. Edward also tried to conquer Scotland. He defeated the Scottish rebels, led by William Wallace, at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 and had Wallace executed in 1305, but Edward died two years later, and his campaign to conquer Scotland failed. He was succeeded by his son, Edward II.
