Short biography:
Elizabeth defeated her siblings for control of the throne of England and was crowned queen in 1558. She increased England's power by defeating the Spanish Armada, a fleet that had previously been all but invincible, in 1588. Additionally, during her reign, English explorers, such as Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake, were successful, as were writers such as William Shakespeare. Because of her suport for exploration and the military, Elizabeth was responsible for starting the British Empire.
