Short biography:
Adolf Hitler was born in Austria and aspired to be an artist. However, he was refused admission to art school and spent his early adulthood in Vienna, poor and homeless. World War I changed the course of Hitler's life. He decided to fight on the side of Germany, whose leaders he liked better than those of Austria. When Germany lost the war, Hitler was devastated and devoted his life to avenging Germany's defeat. He entered politics and joined an obscure party called the National Socialist German Workers' Party, commonly known by its German abbreviation, the Nazi Party. Hitler soon became the leader of the Nazis, and although he was briefly jailed for attempting an armed takeover of the country, he quickly rose in power and was elected chancellor of Germany in 1933. In 1934 he became the Fuhrer, or leader, of Germany and was given almost limitless power. He quickly began to build an empire, conquering Austria, and Czechoslovakia. It was around this time that Hitler and the Nazi regime began to enact increasingly discriminatory laws against Jews and other people who did not fit Hitler's ideal of an Aryan master race. This eventually turned into the Holocaust, the systematic murder of 6 million Jews plus millions of others in death camps. When Hitler invaded Poland, World War II broke out as Britain and France declared war on him. Hitler continued to conquer more territory, such as France and Northern Africa. However, his forces were defeated when he tried to invade Britain and Russia. In 1941, America joined the war against Hitler, and he lost more and more land. In 1945, American and Russian troops invaded Berlin, and Hitler killed himself when it became clear that he could not win the war. 60 million people had died in World War II, making Hitler one of the worst murderers in history. Even more remarkably, in an age where the world had begun to abhor war and strive for world peace, Hitler succeeded in creating the largest empire in European history, and the second largest empire in all of history. An ardent nationalist, Adolf Hitler could be called (in a weird way) one of the most patriotic individuals of all time.
