Napoleon was one of the greatest military leaders in history. He was born in Corsica and attended military school in France. At the age of 24, he became a brigadier general. Later he became first consul of France, and in 1804 he crowned himself emperor. Napoleon won battle after battle and by 1807 he ruled an empire that stretched from Portugal to Italy. However, he was defeated in 1812 when he tried to conquer Russia. In 1814 he was forced to abdicate and was sent to the island of Elba, but he returned to power for 100 days in 1815. At the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington defeated him for good, and he was exiled again, this time to the island of St. Helena, where he died.
