Short biography:
FDR led America through two of the country's greatest challenges: the Great Depression and World War II. He became president when the Depression was at its worst and brought some relief through his "New Deal" - a collection of financial reforms and social programs designed to help the economy. His reforms, which included the Social Security Act, expanded the power of the government by using tax dollars to create a safety net for those in need. In 1941, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. entered World War II. FDR, Winston Churchill, and Josef Stalin, the leaders of the three most powerful Allied powers, became known as the "big three," and by the end of the war, America had become a world power. FDR died of a cerebral hemmorhage as World War II was reaching an end and was succeeded by Harry Truman. He was the only president to be elected to three, let alone four, terms.
