Tiberius, the stepson and adopted son of Augustus, spent most of his young adulthood on military campaigns in Armenia, Gaul, Illyricum, and Germany. He became the second Roman emperor upon Augustus's death. He continued most of Augustus's policies but cut government spending on public entertainment and other expenses, which made him unpopular among most Romans. In 23 BC he began living on Capri and ruled through his lieutenant, Lucius Sejanus, whom he executed in 31 AD because he suspected he was plotting against him. He died in 37 AD and was succeeded by Caligula.
